Interviewing Candidates in Facilities Management

Once you have hired a facilities management recruitment company to provide you with solid CV’s for interviewing, there are still a few things that you must check out with each of the candidates. There has to be a way of determining who the best candidate for the position is, even though all of the CV’s you now hold are actually deemed qualified to do the job.

You may want to make it a more interactive interview and take the person on a tour of the facilities they will be managing. Look for signs on their face of whether they look worried about certain areas, pay attention to the things on the tour and ask questions. Candidates who look worried but don’t ask questions should be ruled out immediately. That’s typically a tell that they aren’t sure if they can handle the job but they won’t speak up, which means that if hired, they could be covering up their inexperience with who knows what.

If a person isn’t paying attention to the tour that you’re giving, it either means that they’re in the job for the money and doesn’t care about the facilities or they think that they know how to run the facilities better than you and they’ll just take care of everything once you leave. Neither one of these scenarios are going to be very good for your ultimate success, either.

A person who nods throughout the tour and asks questions shows that they are genuinely interested in the building and wants to know more so that they can better understand the facilities and make improvements upon it based on their previous experience. This is a candidate that you should feel proud to have on your team because they likely won’t disappoint you.

All of these things are good to know about potential management personnel that you wouldn’t get to know playing 20 questions behind the desk. Since their resume has already been looked at for the right skills, it’s your chance to really get in there and see what they’re made of. Show them different scenarios and ask them what their opinion is.

Pick up some financials and see what they have to say about it. Let them ask about budgets and insight. The right hire can make a significant difference in the day to day operations of FM. It will lead to better profits, happier employees and a longer contract for the facilities.

The facilities management recruitment firm will do a lot of the leg work for you, but the final decision will always be up to you. There may be several candidates to choose from, so you have to determine how you will narrow down the field to hire the best one.
