Keeping Focused in Recruitment

Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” If you’ve ever searched for a new job, you know how frustrating and, well, insane it can make you feel. Allowing your emotions to get the best of you causes you to lose focus, and this is where most people give up their job search.

If you feel like you’re at the end of your rope with your job search, here are some things you can do to help pick you back up and stay focused and motivated.

First, take a look at your CV, or find a professional to look at it if possible. There may be glaring holes that are causing you to not even get a first interview. A poorly produced CV reduces your chances of reaching even interview stage.

Second, how prepared are you for your interviews? Do you know the company you’re applying for, and I mean really know it? Do you have your major career accomplishments on the forefront of your mind when you go in for interviews? Have you even practiced your interview skills with a friend or, better yet, recorded those practice interviews so you can see what the employer is seeing in you?

Third, are you applying for jobs that fit your skill set, or are you applying for jobs that are outside of your league? If you have no management experience but all you’re applying for are management jobs, you may want to rethink the jobs you’re applying for.

Finally, are you doing any networking while finding a job? Social networks like Facebook and Twitter are great places to meet new people and even get the word out to your friends and family that you’re looking for a new job.

If you are holding out hope that the perfect job is going to land in your lap with very little effort on your part, this may be the cause of your frustration. You need to remain focused and persevere – don’t let the defeats of job searching get the best of you. There is a job out there for you…you just have to push through the frustration and insanity to find it.
