8 Top Tips for Landing Your Dream FM Job

Life is short, and you spend a lot of it at work. So if you’re dreaming of a new dream FM job and career and simply want to love going to work each day, follow our 8 tips and you’ll be well on your way!

GET TO KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

It might be that you don’t know what your dream job is, so take time out to think about what you enjoy doing.

› What drives you?

› What would make you get up each morning?

Spend time researching different careers and industries to discover exciting new opportunities. Online assessments are great too; as they can really help you understand what you’re looking for.

GET GOING!

› Don’t wait, start today!

As we get older we inevitably end up with larger financial responsibilities, and often family commitments, so the younger you get going, the less it hurts if you have to take a step backwards. However don’t worry if you do have a lot of commitments, it might just take a little longer, however when you have your dream job at the end of it, it’ll certainly be worth it!

LEARN EVERYTHING YOU CAN

Once you know what it is you’re aiming for, you need to learn everything you can about the career.

› How do people get in to it?

› Who are the key employers?

› Are there any events you can attend that will tell you more about the career choice?

Reach out and make contact with people who might have the information, or who can advise you on how best to get your hands on it!

KEEP THE RISK LOW

Chasing your dream job is exciting, but the reality is it can take a long time, so keep the risk as low as possible. It’ll be hard work, but if you need training try and fit it around your full time job, if you dream of going out on your own, maybe try to negotiate different hours, or even part time hours, to make sure you still have a steady income.

CELEBRATE EVERY STEP

Don’t judge your success on whether you land your dream job in a set amount of time. Along the way there are going to be lots of mini successes! For example it might be when you complete a course, or maybe land an interview. Celebrating each success will keep you motivated

DON’T WORRY ABOUT HAVING THE EXPERIENCE

› Go out there and get it!

People automatically rule out certain careers because they worry they haven’t got the experience. Yet through evening courses, online training or voluntary work in the relevant industry, you can find a way to build your experience and knowledge if you have the passion to learn.

BE PREPARED TO WAIT

It isn’t going to happen overnight so be prepared to wait! You might want to set yourself a deadline to achieve your dream job, but be realistic with it, as missed deadlines can be really demotivating. Try not to idolise the role either, and feel like your work will be done when you land it. That’s when the work really begins!

BE PERSISTANT

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
– Calvin Coolidge

The big thing with trying to achieve your dream job is to be persistent. You are going to take knockbacks, you’re going to fail at certain things, the most important thing is to keep trying! It isn’t going to be easy, but when you’re doing your dream job every single day you’ll be so glad you took every one of these steps!
