The Royal Institution

The Royal Institution of Great Britain (RI) is a world-renowned organisation for scientific education and research based in the City of Westminster. Founded in 1799, The Royal Institution is based in a large Grade I listed premises in Mayfair which is a multi-purpose building open to the public. In addition, the RI acts as a busy events venue, as well as providing office accommodation for the RI team and commercial tenants.

The Royal Institution approached several agencies to support in the recruitment of a Head of Facilities. As part of this competitive process, Maxwell Stephens provided 3 excellent candidates for interview, of which 1 was ultimately offered the position.

The Head of Facilities is responsible for the effective delivery of facilities services at the RI for all building users including staff, visitors, clients, audiences and tenants.

They are responsible for ensuring that the physical environment is fit for purpose in terms of premises, facilities, health & safety and office accommodation in order to deliver successful staff performance and excellent customer service. Emphasis is placed on optimising the utilisation of space to maximise financial returns through venue hire, hospitality and commercial tenants.

The post-holder also manages a variety of outsourced and contracted services to ensure the RI receives the best value for money, and maintains beneficial partnership arrangements, to ensure all building users experience a seamless service.

The Position

The Candidate

The successful candidate for this role required significant, demonstrable experience in facilities management, including contract management, tendering, business development, continuity planning, and hospitality services. Experience of events management, people management, and budget management were also essential requirements for the position.

Personality fit was a key consideration throughout this recruitment project. The RI required an individual who has the ability to influence at all levels of the organisation, acting with tact and diplomacy at all times. The post-holder needs the drive to constantly seek improvement and embrace change, whilst having the ability to see the big picture and how they can contribute towards the organisations’ mission.
