Bader International Study Centre Buildings and Facilities Manager at Herstmonceux Castle

Bader International Study Centre (BISC), located at historic Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, is the overseas campus of Queen’s University, Canada. The campus occupies a 600-acre estate including a range of academic, residential and recreational facilities.

BISC apporached Maxwell Stephens to support in the recruitment of a Buildings and Facilities Manager to lead in the care and maintenance of the Grade 1 listed 15th century castle, student residences, vehicle fleet and other on-site buildings.

The Position

The main purpose of this position was to oversee the building works, including project work, and services at the BISC, with an oversight for Health and Safety. The main duties of the role included but were not limited to:

• Prioritise the repairs and maintenance of buildings and facilities on site, including tenanted properties.

• Oversee the maintenance department.

• Ensure upkeep of all buildings, residences and facilities including the laundry, gym, visitor centre, art gallery and ticket office.

• Manage health and safety and act as the lead for and health and safety issues.

• Working with the Security Supervisor to improve the security of the estate including CCTV system.

• Liaising senior leadership on selection of contractors for specific projects.

• Manage strategic and operational works projects.

• Oversee maintenance of all BISC vehicles.

• Budget management.

The Candidate

Due to the wide ranging remit of this Building and Facilities Manager role, a range of key skills, knowledge and qualifications were vital for the profile of the ideal candidate.

In regards to qualifications it was essential that the successful candidate held at least a level 3 City & Guilds, CIOB, BIFM or other Construction/Facilities Management qualification, in addition to a relevant NEBOSH certificate. Ideally the post holder would also hold a relevant Bachelor’s Degree of equivalent professional qualification in a recognised project management, surveying or building discipline.

The unique setting of Bader International Study Centre meant that having  experience of working with listed building prerequisite was an absolute necessity. With extensive knowledge of building processes and construction trades, the ideal candidate would have experience around the areas of tendering and procurement, budget management, and project management.

In regards to personal skills and competencies the role required an individual with excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with people at all levels, combined with leadership skills in staff and contractor management.
