The Academy of Medical Sciences

The Academy is an independent charity that represents the spectrum of medical science – from basic research through clinical application to healthcare delivery.  Their vision is to improve health through research.

In October 2010 the Academy of Medical Sciences moved to newly refurbished premises following a successful £5 million fundraising appeal. The six storey, Grade II listed building built circa 1770 and modern Mews House (total 17,000 sq ft), provides a headquarters for the Academy that has its offices on two floors. The Academy contacted Maxwell Stephens to recruit a Facilities Manager on an exclusive basis.

The Position

The Facilities Manager is required to manage the building and support services of the Academy in Central London. The Facilities Manager is tasked with providing a first class standard service to all users of the building including Academy staff, office tenants, conferencing contractors and external visitors.

Some of the key responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

• Managing the hard and soft services of the building

• Project management of building and IT improvement works

• Provide IT support, managing the IT and communications networks

• Health and Safety Compliance

• Tenant Services

• Supporting the conferencing contractors in delivering first class accommodations and IT/AV services to external clients.

The Candidate

For this role we had to find candidates who had significant experience within a similar role, with a good working knowledge of relevant standards and legislation and extensive experience with service change management. In addition, the successful candidate needed to have appropriate experience with budget planning and management, as well as experience in managing people effectively.

As a self-motivated and resourceful individual, the postholder would have the ability to generate and implement ideas, with the wherewithal to anticipate problems and provide solutions. As team management is an aspect of the role, the postholder needed to be able to enthuse and motivate others using highly effective communication skills.
