Few estates can rival the scale, complexity, and heritage of this institution. With hundreds of buildings, millions of square feet of space, and a multi-billion-pound asset base, this is an environment where engineering excellence and innovation truly matter.

As Assistant Director, Engineering & Infrastructure, you’ll play a pivotal role in transforming this extraordinary estate — driving forward a bold vision to decarbonise, digitise, and future-proof the infrastructure that underpins world-leading teaching, research, and discovery.

The Opportunity

This is a high-impact leadership role where you will:

• Lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams covering mechanical, electrical, energy, and fabric disciplines.

• Oversee major infrastructure redevelopment projects aligned with a long-term Infrastructure and Decarbonisation Masterplan.

• Spearhead the replacement of key energy systems, including a major Heat and Power Network transformation.

• Embed digital innovation through smart systems integration, asset intelligence, and data-driven engineering.

• Shape strategic investment decisions across a substantial annual infrastructure budget.

• Champion safety, sustainability, and operational excellence across one of the UK’s most significant estates.

About You

You’re an accomplished leader with deep technical expertise and a proven record of delivering complex engineering and maintenance programmes across large, multi-site environments.

You combine a strategic mindset with hands-on understanding — confident influencing at executive level while inspiring teams to deliver exceptional results.

You’ll bring:

• Degree-level education and professional membership (e.g. CEng, MCIBSE, MIET or similar).

• Strong financial and commercial acumen, with experience managing major budgets and programmes.

• A track record of leading decarbonisation or digital transformation initiatives in estates or infrastructure settings.

• A passion for innovation, sustainability, and delivering engineering solutions that stand the test of time.

A Career-Defining Role

This is more than a job — it’s an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy on one of the UK’s most iconic estates. If you’re ready to shape the future of engineering and infrastructure at the highest level, we’d love to hear from you.
