Background

ATG Entertainment (formerly Ambassador Theatre Group) is one of the world's leading live entertainment organisations, operating an extensive portfolio of theatres, venues and cultural destinations across the UK and internationally. Its property estate ranges from historic theatres to modern performance venues and the operational support facilities behind them.

ATG asked Maxwell Stephens to recruit an experienced Property Manager to support the management, maintenance and long-term stewardship of that portfolio. The appointment mattered because venue infrastructure, building assets and maintenance programmes have to support two things at once: the operational performance of each venue and the experience of the audiences who use it.

Theatre estates are demanding to manage. Older buildings carry a heavier maintenance burden and more constraints on how work can be carried out, while a live performance schedule leaves limited windows for planned works and little tolerance for reactive failures. A property professional in this environment needs both technical understanding and the judgement to sequence work around the business.

The Challenge

ATG needed a Property Manager who could act as the link between central property functions and venue-based maintenance teams across its theatre portfolio — a role that combines technical knowledge, commercial awareness and the ability to manage a wide range of stakeholders.

The successful candidate would be responsible for:

• Managing day-to-day property and building maintenance activities.
• Supporting venue engineering and maintenance teams.

That breadth is the difficulty. The role demanded someone able to balance immediate operational priorities against long-term property strategy, while supporting an estate that is geographically dispersed and operationally critical to the business.

Understanding the requirement

Maxwell Stephens worked closely with ATG's leadership team to build a clear picture of the operational and technical requirements of the role.
