Babcock's FM Force: Consulting Brilliance That Defused Contractual Landmines

Background

Maxwell Stephens successfully placed an experienced FM Consultant with Babcock International to oversee Facilities Management operations across four Defence Support Group (DSG) sites.

The appointment supported a strategically important area of Babcock’s operations, contributing to a business with approximately £200 million in turnover. The role required a commercially focused FM professional capable of improving service delivery, managing complex contracts, leading a large operational team and rebuilding confidence with a key MOD client.

Role Responsibilities

FM Service Delivery
Managed the delivery of both hard and soft Facilities Management services across a diverse estate comprising industrial production facilities, warehouses and corporate buildings.

Financial & Commercial Management
Held full P&L responsibility for the FM operation, maintaining strong commercial control, identifying opportunities to improve value and reducing the risk of contractual penalties.

Contract Management & Remobilisation
Successfully remobilised Facilities Management contracts, carrying out detailed staff reviews, assessing subcontractors for best value and implementing continuous improvement plans to strengthen service delivery and contractual compliance.

Project Management
Led building refurbishment projects from planning through to completion, ensuring works were delivered efficiently, within agreed timescales and with appropriate cost control.

Client Relationship Management
Rebuilt confidence and strengthened the relationship with the MOD client through improved communication, delivery and accountability. This contributed to the release of approximately £500,000 of previously suspended works.

Results & Achievements

The successful placement delivered measurable improvements across operational performance, commercial management, team leadership and client relationships.

Improved Operational Performance
Strengthened Help Desk operations and prioritisation processes, helping ensure work orders were completed within agreed KPIs and reducing the risk of financial penalties associated with service failures.

Stronger Commercial Control
Improved oversight of contracts, subcontractors and service delivery, supporting better value for money and stronger financial performance across the FM operation.

Successful Contract Remobilisation
Introduced clearer processes, staff reviews and continuous improvement measures, helping create a more structured and effective Facilities Management service.

Rebuilt Client Confidence
Strengthened the relationship with the MOD client, helping restore trust and enabling around £0.5 million of outstanding works to move forward.

Effective Team Leadership
Managed more than 40 direct employees, service providers and subcontractors, while also recruiting a new FM Manager and overseeing a smooth handover to maintain continuity and client satisfaction.

The placement demonstrates Maxwell Stephens’ ability to identify senior Facilities Management professionals who can operate effectively within complex, high-value and commercially demanding environments, combining operational expertise with strong leadership, financial management and stakeholder engagement.
