Background

Facebook UK (now part of Meta) is one of the world's leading technology companies, operating some of the best-known workplaces in the industry. Supporting thousands of employees and visitors, its London offices are designed to encourage creativity and collaboration, which places significant demands on the Facilities Management function.

To support its continued growth, Facebook required a Head of Facilities Management to lead the operational performance of its London estate while maintaining the workplace experience expected across its global portfolio. Facebook approached Maxwell Stephens to run the search.

The Challenge

The Head of Facilities Management would be responsible for overseeing three flagship London properties totalling more than 250,000 square feet. This was a high-profile leadership appointment requiring an individual capable of managing complex facilities operations within a demanding, fast-paced corporate environment.

The successful candidate needed to demonstrate:

• Extensive experience of managing large, multi-site corporate facilities.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, working with senior executives and demanding internal customers.
• Expertise in vendor management, procurement and contract negotiation.
• Financial acumen, including responsibility for significant operational budgets.
• A comprehensive understanding of health & safety, compliance and risk management.

Beyond technical capability, Facebook required a leader who could embrace innovation, challenge established ways of working and keep improving the workplace experience for employees.

Head-of-function roles with technology occupiers differ from the equivalent post in most corporate estates. The workplace is treated as a product in its own right, the internal customer base is vocal, and a global workplace team sets standards the local head is expected to meet. Candidates who have led large estates but never worked under that kind of internal scrutiny often find the transition harder than the size of the portfolio would suggest.
