The Client
Established in 1885, Millwall Football Club is one of England's most celebrated clubs, currently competing in the EFL Championship. The Club operates across three sites, with its home at The Den in South Bermondsey — a stadium that demands world-class facilities management on matchdays and beyond.
The Brief
Millwall engaged us to find a Facilities Manager to take full ownership of front-of-house operations, estate compliance, and matchday readiness across all three sites. Reporting to the Head of Operations, the role required a hands-on leader with a NEBOSH or IOSH qualification, proven experience in sports venues or large public event environments, and the ability to manage multi-disciplinary teams and contractors under pressure.
The Challenge
This wasn't a straightforward search. The right candidate needed to move seamlessly between the intensity of Championship matchdays — where crowd safety and operational precision are non-negotiable — and the day-to-day disciplines of estate management, compliance, and sustainability. That breadth of scope, combined with the Club's strong safeguarding and equality commitments, called for someone of both technical credibility and strong character.
Our Approach
We drew on our specialist network across the sports, leisure, and large public venue sectors, screening candidates on technical qualifications, leadership under pressure, and cultural fit. Scenario-based interviews tested judgement in matchday and compliance situations, ensuring we only presented candidates who could genuinely hit the ground running.
The Outcome
We successfully placed a Facilities Manager with a strong sports venue background, the right Health & Safety credentials, and the leadership credibility to manage teams across all three sites from day one. Millwall now has a facilities lead ready to handle everything from contractor schedules and CAPEX coordination to matchday operations and stadium compliance.
