Maxwell Stephens, the UK’s leading facilities management recruitment company, has been appointed by our client to find an interim Technical Author to develop, write, implement and/or review and amend:

  • operational Building Services technical policies and standards so that our client meets its statutory, regulatory, and mandatory obligations,
  • Building Services standard operation procedures to ensure compliance with relevant technical policies and standards, and
  • Building Services standard operation procedures to support the client’s Facilities and Infrastructure Department’s (F&I) strategic and operational objections, ensuring the safe and smooth running of its estates with relevant checks for risk assessments and cost effectiveness made, and enabling business critical functions.

The department manages support services for the client’s complex property portfolio with an operating budget of £60m a year. The department reviews and implements numerous long-term functional contracts, service contracts, frameworks, and project works.

You’ll ensure that all documentation is compliant with the relevant legislation, HSE guidance notes, industry best practices, and the objectives of our client.

You’ll be responsible for ensuring compliance within all standard operating procedures related to appropriate PPM tasks.

You’ll work in collaboration with subject matter experts, staff and contractors to clarify all technical and procedural issues. You’ll engage with our client’s safety services team and other key departmental stakeholders to understand and mitigate for expressed and unexpressed specific needs and concerns, specifically with relation to academic departments.

There may be some out-of-hours working needed to resolve unforeseen problems, attend emergency situations, maintain critical building services and conditions, or to meet customers’ exceptional demands. You will also carry out any other duties as requested by your line manager or a head of a department or division.

About you

Possessing the relevant technical qualifications and a member of a relevant professional body, you’ll have previously worked in technical authoring, specification writing, and related disciplines. Our client considers experience of working in internal auditing, education to degree status, qualification as a chartered engineer, possession of a valid CSCS card or possession of a recognised H&S qualification as desirable characteristics.

You have experience in operations management, contract procurement and management, and change experience management. You have worked within large academic institutions previously and you understand the varied responsibilities of Academic and Estates Departments in relation to statutory compliance and to responsible persons. You’ll have demonstrated in previous roles the knowledge and ability required for this type of position, including the management of maintenance operations using contractors and directly employed staff.

You also have a thorough knowledge of managing maintenance operations in a large multi-site organisation and H&S legislation (including application thereof).

You have an expertise and understanding of building systems including legislation and service requirements. You bring significant experience as a technical author and you write, edit, and present well-organised information you then can impart in clear, simple English. You have an extensive background in the creation of draft specifications and service standards.

You’re ICT literate and are able to understand and act upon client briefs and work autonomously and unsupervised to a very high standard. You have an attention to detail, an attention to process, and an appreciation of accuracy.
