In brief

A dated view of nine leadership adverts in Maxwell Stephens’ public portfolio, with hiring questions and clear limits on what a snapshot can show.

Facilities leadership hiring trends are useful only when the evidence and its limits are clear. This report combines a current view of Maxwell Stephens’ advertised leadership roles with practical questions for employers. The 7 November 2026 snapshot contains nine Head of Function, Director or Executive adverts within 22 open public adverts. It is a portfolio snapshot, not a measurement of UK hiring growth.

The leadership roles in this snapshot

  • Two Head of Function adverts, three Director adverts and four Executive adverts.
  • Five of the nine leadership adverts state numeric pay; four do not.
  • The nine roles cover FM, estates, engineering and wider operations leadership. A shared seniority label does not make their accountabilities interchangeable.

What the sample suggests employers should ask

Does the title describe the actual decision-making role?

Define the estate, services, reporting line and investment decisions. A Director, Head of Facilities and COO can sit at very different points in an organisation. Assess the problem to solve before deciding which title will attract the right person.

Is the proposition clear enough for a senior candidate to assess?

Four leadership adverts in this sample do not state a numeric salary. That does not establish why the figure was withheld or how candidates reacted. It does show why a search conversation needs an early, candid discussion about total reward, authority and scope.

Does the assessment test leadership through others?

Use evidence of decisions, delegation, supplier governance and executive communication. Senior candidates should be able to explain the resources and authority behind their results. A career history alone does not show how they would operate in a different structure.

Wider industry context

IWFM’s 2026 Market Outlook announcement describes a more complex environment and a report informed by over 400 respondents. That is a separate industry source, not the sample used here. Its scale is a reminder to distinguish broad research from one firm’s advertised portfolio. This page does not reproduce findings from a paid report that has not been reviewed.

A practical hiring response

  • Agree first-year outcomes and the decisions the role can make.
  • Benchmark the responsibility and total package, rather than copying a title.
  • Identify comparable operating environments for market mapping.
  • Assess strategy, commercial judgement, people leadership and delivery against the same brief.
  • Resolve offer and onboarding responsibilities before the search begins.

Methodology and limits

The source set is the same 22 verified public adverts used in the 7 November Salary Index. Leadership means the manually assigned Head of Function, Director or Executive level. Counts are deduplicated by item ID. The snapshot excludes draft, archived, closed and expired adverts. It contains no candidate survey, confidential search, accepted-offer or time-to-fill data.

There is no like-for-like time series in this report. New and closed adverts, changes to a role’s classification and changes in the mix can all move the figures. We therefore do not claim that demand, pay or leadership requirements rose by a stated percentage. Future editions need the same capture rules and explicit cohort comparisons.

Inspect the Salary Index and complete source register and the separately preserved Q3 baseline.

Frequently asked questions

Does this report prove that UK Facilities Director hiring is increasing?

No. A snapshot of one firm’s open adverts cannot establish a UK hiring trend. It can show the current visible portfolio and identify questions for a specific appointment.

What should employers assess when hiring an FM leader?

Assess the candidate’s decisions and outcomes against the actual remit, including strategy, financial judgement, people leadership, supplier governance and executive communication.

Key takeaways

  • Nine leadership adverts in this 22-advert snapshot; five disclose numeric pay.
  • Title, authority and estate complexity need to be assessed together.
  • A comparable time series is needed before claiming market growth.
